Choosing a diet is almost as difficult as staying on track with one for some people! Each week a new diet plan comes out, and you could browse sites on the subject or look at books and articles all day. So how exactly do you choose the best diet? Firstly you must realize that there’s no universal diet that is right for everybody. You need to discover the one that’s right for you, and in this article we’ll be helping you to do this.
You have to be aware of the things you’re eating each day, regardless of what diet you pick. This may not sound difficult, but it’s very easy to lose track of all the calories you consume all day long, including snacks and beverages. That’s why it’s a good idea to start a food journal, where you jot down every single item you consume, no matter how small. You’ll probably be surprised by all of the little things that slip in after a couple of weeks. Really you may not be counting everything, even though you think you’re sticking to your diet. By using the food journal as a tool you’ll be helped with staying on course with your diet, or at least being aware of if you are cheating.
Another diet that may appeal to you is the Volumetrics Diet which has a scientific approach to things. This diet was started by Barbara Rolls, a nutrition professor, and it is to do with how filling a food is relative to the calories in it, energy density of foods. Less dense foods will help you lose weight as they are low in calories but high in volume. An example of this is fruit. The opposite of this is high density foods, these will add lots of calories from only a small volume of the food, like sweets or cookies. Categories are used in the Volumetrics Diet with group 1 being least dense foods and 4 being most. Eating as much as possible for the first two groups is your goal.
For the sake of an extremely overweight person’s health, their doctor may suggest that they need to lose a lot of weight. It is a good idea to go on a very low calorie diet if this is the case for you. Most people consume well over 800 calories a day but this diet requires you to have less than 800 per day. Nutrients are something that you need and on this diet you are at risk of not getting enough, that’s why most people are medically supervised when on it. There are lots of side effects that you may experience if you go on this diet on your own and you may go back to over eating.
Everybody is different, this is why there is no diet that is best for everyone. You have to be patient and give the diet a chance, for one thing. Except for extremely low calorie diets, which aren’t usually considered healthy, it’s best to lose weight gradually, as this gives you the best chance of keeping the weight off for good.
